Long stretches of Mediterranean coastline with beach bars, palm trees, sparkling sea views, and the famous charcoal-grilled sardines. The sea here can be quite cool, with relatively deep, dark waters, while the beaches feature greyish sand or pebbles. One of the region’s most distinctive features is the unique combination of the Mediterranean Sea and mountain ranges, creating a breathtaking landscape.
What the point? A beach day here is about much more than sun and sea - it’s also an essential part of the local food culture. At traditional seaside chiringuitos (beach bars), you can try espetos de sardinas: fresh sardines skewered on long cane sticks and grilled over hot coals, traditionally in an old fishing boat filled with sand and used as a makeshift barbecue.
A special highlight: Near Marbella, on Playa de Las Chapas, a striking tall, dead tree stands secured to a rocky outcrop right at the water’s edge.
