A fairytale-like castle perched on a hillside, with the charming whitewashed streets of a traditional Andalusian village just a short walk away, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the town and the sea from above.
What the point? The castle was built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s voyage and the discovery of America. It was created between 1987 and 1994 by a doctor named Esteban Martín, working alongside two stonemasons. Its architecture blends Gothic, Romanesque, Byzantine, and Mudéjar influences, making it look as though several different historical periods have been brought together in a single building.
Colomares is a story of Columbus carved in stone. Hidden throughout the castle are representations of the three ships from his expedition - the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. Inside, you’ll also find a tiny chapel measuring just 1.96 square meters, often described as the smallest church in the world.
